While it can be difficult to address the constellation of clinical manifestations as well as multiple organ systems involved in post-Covid sequelae, as holistic health practitioners, acupuncture and natural medicine can be a missing link for managing chronic manifestations of Covid. Many of the symptoms of long-Covid, such as fatigue, brain fog, irregular menstruation, body aches, headaches, etc. are already things we often treat successfully with acupuncture and herbs in the clinic!
Chinese people around the world will soon be celebrating both the Spring Festival and the New Year on the same day. Most of us know the Winter Solstice as the darkest day of the year, the moment when the northern hemisphere of the earth is tilted farthest away from the sun—it happens around 7:30 pm this Thursday, December 21. The meaning, however, carries a much deeper significance. It’s the time when the substantial, contracting qualities of Yin—along with the cold and darkness—hand off the baton to the rising, expanding qualities of Yang, which include warmth and lightness.

The season of fall is associated with the Lungs and the Metal element in Chinese Medicine. It’s a time to start turning within, to clarify what you most value, and to get back into healthy nourishing self-care routines. Fall is a great time to get back into your acupuncture routine, especially if you suffer from colds, pneumonia, asthma, depression, fatigue, arthritis, or any condition that worsens in the winter months.
One of our Acupuncturists, Rachel Hinnen, was recently featured in Bon Appetit Magazine for her ethical and sustainable meat production business Vorfreude Dairy Beef. In additional to Acupuncture and healing, Rachel has had a life long passion to have a cattle ranch which has lead her to raise, care for and process retired dairy cows for high-quality grass-fed beef. In this blog, Rachel explores the intersection of her two passions, acupuncture and cows.
Picture a seed that has been under the soil all winter, that is now trying to sprout and push its way to the top and grow in the sun. This intense, upwards, growing energy is what also surrounds us in the spring. The organ associated with spring is the liver, the associated emotion is frustration, the color is green and the element is wood. If you find yourself having trouble sleeping, especially if you’re waking up between the time of the Liver 3:00-5:00 AM, then it might be time to get some acupuncture and do some of these activities and diet changes to help align with spring!
Fascia is ALIVE and electric! It contains nerve endings and cells that adapt and respond to stimuli within and around fascia. Deep fascia envelops and penetrates muscles, giving rise to the term Myofascial, pertaining to both muscle (myo-) and fascia. Fascia wraps around each muscle and also around groups of muscles with similar functions creating muscle compartments. To further zoom out, fascia organizes itself into broader chains of fascia that create relationships between muscles extending from feet to head!

As we enter the season of fall, looking at how nature transitions during this time can be inspiration for what we should do as well to prepare for the colder months. In Autumn, the harvest is in full swing and animals are storing food for the winter and growing their thicker coats. Leaves and petals are dropping off plants to conserve energy and not be left out to be damaged by the elements. Fall is a time for transitioning into slowing down and storing energy for winter.
Late summer is associated with the earth element and the Spleen and Stomach channels. The Spleen and Stomach rule digestion which is turn helps support the building of the musculoskeletal system and in particular the nourishment of muscle tissues. Just as the Spleen and Stomach help us digest our food, they also help us “digest” and process our emotional life.
Healthy food choices are a big part of a nourishing wellness routine, but did you know that there are additional lifestyle habits that help digestion and wellbeing? Here are some of our favorite food and lifestyle tips to help improve your digestion, nourish your body, and keep you feeling your best!
Did you know that veterans in the Portland VA health care system are eligible for acupuncture? Acupuncture is a great way to help ease into the next season as well as keep us balanced throughout transitions. In addition to acupuncture, Chinese medicine also uses food therapy to keep elements in balance. The heat of summer can be taxing on our body fluids, so eating cooling and moistening foods is important. Digestion can also become sluggish with the damp heat of summer, so eating smaller and lighter meals can help keep it running at its best.
Did you know that May is National Mental Health Awareness Month? There is increasing public awareness around many mental health conditions and ways they can be helped. Acupuncture has a long history of being used to treat mental health conditions. Current research has demonstrated that anxiety, one very common mental health concern, can benefit from acupuncture.
Rachel believes in individualizing treatments and utilizes multiple needling techniques in order to be able to adapt to patient needs. Treatments are tailored to be deeper, stronger needling, or more superficial gentle needling, based on the conditions and patients’ constitution. Her treatments are based in acknowledging the body’s innate ability to heal itself and enabling it to do so in the most effective way.
Springtime is arriving! While we welcome the days growing longer and the beautiful flowers blooming, many don’t welcome the seasonal allergies that also arrive with springtime. We are already starting to see people coming into the clinic with symptoms of seasonal allergies. Do you suffer from itchy watery eyes, sneezing, congestion, fatigue, or skin irritation when spring arrives?
We have some exciting news to share about insurance benefits for acupuncture. Legislation in Oregon was recently passed that designated acupuncture as an essential health benefit. Now all private insurers in the state of Oregon are required to include acupuncture benefits.
