Acupuncture FAQs: Your Questions Answered
Curious about acupuncture but not sure what to expect? You’re not alone! Whether you’re considering acupuncture for pain relief, injury recovery, or ongoing wellness, it’s natural to have questions before your first appointment.
At Dynamic Acupuncture, we want you to feel comfortable and informed about your care. We’ve answered some of the most frequently asked questions about acupuncture, from what treatment feels like to what to wear, how often to come, and whether insurance covers your visits.
What Should I Expect at My First Acupuncture Appointment?
Your first appointment at Dynamic Acupuncture is a comprehensive 90-minute session designed to help us understand your health history, current concerns, and treatment goals.
Before your visit, you’ll receive an email with a link to complete your new patient paperwork online. This allows us to review your health history ahead of time and make the most of your appointment.
During your initial visit, we will:
Review your health history and discuss your primary concerns.
Answer your questions and explain how acupuncture can help.
Provide your first acupuncture treatment.
Develop a personalized treatment plan based on your needs and goals.
Follow-up appointments are 60 minutes and focus on your ongoing progress, continued treatment, and adjustments as needed.
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
Most patients find acupuncture much more comfortable than they expect!
Acupuncture needles are extremely thin, solid needles that are very different from the hollow needles used for injections or blood draws. They are sterile and single-use, and most patients feel little to no sensation when they are inserted.
You may notice mild tingling, warmth, heaviness, or a dull ache around a needle site. Sensations vary from person to person, and you can always let your acupuncturist know if something feels uncomfortable.
At Dynamic Acupuncture, we use a gentle, effective approach and prioritize your comfort throughout treatment.
What Does Acupuncture Feel Like?
Everyone experiences acupuncture differently. Some people notice very little sensation, while others experience warmth, tingling, or a gentle ache during treatment.
One of the most common experiences is deep relaxation. Many patients enjoy the opportunity to rest quietly while their treatment is underway.
Your experience may also change over time as you become more familiar with acupuncture. We’ll check in with you and adjust your treatment as needed.
What Should I Wear to Acupuncture?
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is ideal. Depending on your treatment, we may need access to your arms, legs, back, or abdomen.
We recommend wearing:
Loose pants or shorts that can be rolled above your knees.
A comfortable shirt or layers that allow access to your arms and upper back.
Clothing that makes it easy to get comfortable on the treatment table.
Your privacy and comfort are important to us. If you have questions about what to wear for your specific concern, feel free to ask before your appointment.
How Often Should I Get Acupuncture?
Acupuncture often works best as a series of treatments, with benefits building over time. The ideal frequency depends on your condition, how long you’ve experienced symptoms, your goals, and how your body responds.
Many patients begin with 6–8 treatments, after which we reassess progress and discuss the next steps.
General treatment recommendations may include:
Acute conditions or recent injuries: Two to three treatments per week may be recommended initially.
Chronic pain or ongoing concerns: Weekly treatments over a longer period may be beneficial.
Preventive or maintenance care: One to two visits per month may help support ongoing wellness.
These are general guidelines. Your treatment plan will be personalized to your needs and adjusted as you progress.
Does Insurance Cover Acupuncture?
Many health insurance plans include acupuncture benefits. Dynamic Acupuncture is in-network with several major insurance providers and can also bill many plans on an out-of-network basis.
We are in-network providers with:
Aetna
Blue Cross Blue Shield
Anthem
Regence
Moda
PacificSource
UnitedHealthcare (UHC)
VA Community Care through TriWest
Motor vehicle accident insurance, including Personal Injury Protection (PIP) claims
We are also proud to participate in the TriWest Community Care Network serving veterans through the Portland VA. We have worked with veterans through the VA community care network, formerly known as Veterans Choice, for several years and have experience supporting a wide variety of health concerns.
How can you find out if your insurance covers acupuncture?
Before your first visit, we are happy to verify your insurance benefits once you’ve provided us with your insurance information. We also always recommend that you contact your insurance company to ask about acupuncture benefits, visit limits, deductibles, and copays. Coverage varies by plan, so verifying your individual benefits is the best way to understand your potential out-of-pocket costs.
What Can Acupuncture Help With?
People seek acupuncture for many reasons, from managing pain and supporting women’s health to finding relief from stress and emotional tension. At Dynamic Acupuncture, we tailor treatments to your individual needs and goals, helping you feel more comfortable, balanced, and supported in your overall well-being.
Pain Management
Pain can affect more than just your body. It can impact your energy, daily activities, sleep, and overall quality of life. Dynamic Acupuncture offers acupuncture for acute and chronic pain, with the goal of reducing discomfort, supporting circulation, and influencing the body's natural pain-regulating processes.
Women's Health
Every phase of a woman's life, from menstruation and pregnancy to menopause, brings unique changes and needs. Acupuncture can be a supportive part of women's health care, helping manage discomfort and promote overall well-being through these transitions.
Stress & Emotional Wellbeing
When stress becomes a constant part of life, it can affect your sleep, mood, energy, and ability to feel your best. Acupuncture may help promote relaxation, support nervous system regulation, and help your body shift away from a prolonged stress response.
How Should I Prepare for My First Acupuncture Visit?
Preparing for your first appointment is simple:
Complete your paperwork: Look for an email with a link to your new patient forms.
Eat beforehand: Have a light meal or snack rather than arriving on an empty stomach.
Wear comfortable clothing: Choose clothes that allow easy access to the areas being treated.
Bring your questions: Let us know what you hope to improve and any concerns you may have.
Arrive with a little extra time: Avoid rushing so you can settle in and feel comfortable.
You don’t need any prior experience with acupuncture. We’ll walk you through the process and answer your questions along the way.
